iPhone 2.2

The last purchase of a phone I made was in December 2004. I found the receipt in a dusty stack of papers at my parents house a couple of weeks ago. This phone was of a well known brand and has been of satisfaction for me as the modest user I have been, until the other day when it did not want to wake up anymore.

I realized that I needed a new phone. In addition to that, a good and more advanced phone. As of no internet connection at home nor the willingness to bother about mobile broadband, the options narrowed down to a few. I feared the hype of iPhone would get to me so I had a look on the options. None of them were as good, especially when it comes to user interface and touchscreen functions. (Touchscreen really is the shit, I mean, how many wants to carry around an extra “pen”, yet another accessory to drop and then you can’t use your phone anymore?) So I ended up paying Apple anyway.

In Amsterdam the 3G coverage has been satisfactory so far and I haven’t had any complaints except for Safari closing down whenever it feels like doing so. In addition to that the stupidity of not including an option to view certain Quicktime and Flash material has made me a bit less impressed. I think I paid enough money to get those functions included without having to look for a payable application in Appstore.

Surfing around newspapers, blog and chat works fine. And hey, Apple really made a good job when considering how to design an application crash. It slowly fades out to the main menu without any disturbing error messages or similar. Upside is that it looks nice. Downside is that as a user you are not able to troubleshoot much more than that and just hope for Apple to get it fixed sometime soon. On the other hand, that is what most users do anyway. Rely in their Apple faith. And talking of which, Apple just released 2.2.

The 2.2 update was released just a couple of days ago and it is indeed promising! In this article you can also read more about the downsides of the latest update. Personally I look forward to the improvements regarding GPS functionality through Google Maps and Safari although it appears to contain much more than that. Now it is about time to try out an iPhone that has just been updated to 2.0.
