UK iPhone Announced

iphone_five_wide.jpg

The iPhone will arrive in the UK on November 9th, according to Steve Jobs. Jobs also confirmed the speculations regarding the carrier; O2 is the official choice. In classical Apple fashion, he says that the choice was more cultural than economical and that there are a lot of disappointed carriers out there.

The phone itself will cost £269, which may seem like a small number. But when converted to dollars, it doesn’t look small at all; $535. But hopefully, we’ll soon see a similar price cut to that in the U.S. The service plan will cost you £35 ($69), £45 ($89) or £55 ($109) monthly, including unlimited data. Quite expensive but all UK users will also have access to about 7,500 WiFi hotspots, making it a pretty decent deal.

However, Steve Jobs also put an end to our hopes and dreams of a 3G iPhone. Well, at least for now. The version of the phone that’ll be released in November will not feature 3G, though Jobs says that Apple are already working on the generations to come. My guess is that we’ll probably see 3G in the first half of 2008.

When the iPhone is going to be released in other European countries such as France and Germany is unfortunately still unknown. It’s likely to be announced at Apple Expo in Paris, later this month.
