(RED) iPod Shuffle? HD Movie Rentals?

RED_shuffle.jpgJust when I thought we were done speculating; boom, more ideas. Kasper Jade at AppleInsider thinks a (RED) iPod Shuffle will be announced on Wednesday. This sounds likely, and they we’re right the last time, when they accurately predicted the release of a (RED) iPod Nano. But it’s not the red in (RED) that matters; a portion of the sales will be donated to fight AIDS in Africa.

But that’s smalltime news compared to this little piece of information that was picked up by Blackfriars Inc. They noticed that Apple’s long-time Internet content partner, Akamai, has made an announcement saying they’re adding HD video to it’s internet distribution offerings. Can you see the connection there? Akamai->Apple->iTunes Store->Apple TV. If you thinking coincidence, listen to what Blackfriars have to say about it:

“Perhaps. But add the fact that Apple TV, a product whose revenue is being recognized as a 24-month subscription model like the iPhone, sports high-definition outputs, yet has no high-definition iTunes content yet, and you’ve got a high-definition shoe ready to drop sometime; the only question is when. Given we predicted high-definition movies and movie rentals would be announced in September back in June, we’re expecting iTunes to add high-definition content as well as movie rentals next week.”

But wait a minute, it’s getting a bit crowded in the announcement box. We’ve got iPods with touchscreens, iPod Nano’s with video capabilities, red Shuffles, HD video, NAND flash, giant storage space, and some people even say we’re going to see Beatles in iTunes Music Store. And remember, we’ve got six days left and will probably see more of these rumors and guesses. Apple events, there’s nothing like it.
