iPhone Unlocker Delayed Indefinitely

iphone_unlocked_2.jpgJohn McLaughlin, founder of Uniquephones, was supposed to release their unlocking software this week, perhaps today. But releasing an unlocker that messes with the software of the most spoken about phone right now may not be such a smart idea after all. O’Melveny & Myers, an international law firm, proved this point when they called McLaughlin in the middle of the night, threatening to sue him for copyright infringement and dissemination of Apple’s intellectual property.

This in turn resulted in an indefinite delay in the release of his unlocking software. In an official press release on their blog, Uniquephones say they are “taking legal advice to ascertain whether AT&T was sending a warning shot or directly threatening legal action.”

MacWorld reports that McLauglin is concerned about fighting a lawsuit against giant AT&T, afraid it would be the end of his company. Which must be really annoying when you’ve got more than 500,000 potential customers signed up on your website. However, he says he is still planning to release the software but that he’d be happy to let someone else take the heat by doing it first.

And surely someone will eventually take the heat. No matter how many phone calls AT&T’s law firm makes, it’s still just a matter of time before someone releases this software. Who the daredevil will be and what consequences he will face remains to be seen. Subscribe to our feed and we’ll let you know as soon as we know.
