New iMac Benchmark

You’ve seen the looks, you’ve seen the prices but how about performance? The MacWorld test lab has dug deep and measured the power of the new and fresh iMacs from Apple. How does it perform compared to it’s predecessor?

imac_both.jpgWell, there’s actually not much of a boost in performance compared to the older iMac. A slightly better graphics card and the newer Intel Core 2 Duo processor are what makes most of the difference. MacWorld reported seeing faster startup times, faster unpacking of files and an increase in Photoshop performance.

The big difference can be seen when compared to the old G5 systems. The new top of the line iMac had a great 43 percent higher Speedmark score than it’s G5 grandpa. In some tests it even finished in half the time it took for the G5. The slightly slower 2Ghz iMac showed a 32 percent increase in Speedmark scores.

This seems similar to when the MacBook was upgraded to Intel Core 2 Duo. The performance boost may not be a reason to upgrade for those who already own an Intel Mac but maybe for owners of older systems. However, the glorious slim aluminum looks might be a reason…

  1. I migrated from the old G5 power PC model and am delighted with the speed, looks and footprint. Anxiously awaiting the new wireless keyboard although the new wired one is quite charming.

I of course am an addict to Macs and can’t be relied upon to give a unbiased appraisal, because I am hopelessly addicted to anything Mac.

  2. It’s okay, no one visiting this site should be able to give completely unbiased appraisals. ;)

Nice to hear a report from the frontline, i.e. from actual customers. You’re a lucky man, owning that computer. And by the way, I’m curious about that keyboard, especially the wireless version. Come back and tell me what you think of it, okay?
