Analyzing The New Apple Keyboard

mac_keyboard_compare.jpgIf you haven’t seen the rumored new Apple keyboard, I suggest you take a look at it here. Now, we don’t know if this is what’s going to be shipped with the new Macs. We don’t have a clue, but that doesn’t stop people from analyzing it, does it?

Apparently not. Circa1978 has posted an image pointing out the differences between the new and the old keyboard. It also gives us two large photos so we can compare them. Here’s our comments on the new (or not) keyboard:

  • Volume controls and eject button move end of function keys.
I like having them above the keypad. It’s convenient. But I guess it’s a matter of getting used to it. Anyway, why would you use them when you’ve got a remote control?
  • Help key replaced by fn key.
Is there a help key? Oh yeah, there it is. Might as well replace it with something useful.
  • Apple logo replace with ‘command’ text on command key.
Excellent. Prevents people from confusing command with control, a common beginner problem.
  • New playback controls at function keys.
Could be useful. Again, there’s a remote control that does the job well. But if you don’t have it, these keys might be a substitute.
  • New function key assignments.
This is going to be tough. I’m really used to F9-F12, so we’ll see how this goes.

That’s about it. The new font style look like it might just work even though the current one is close to perfection. Anyhow, it’s going to be interesting finding out if this is the real thing. And hopefully we’ll find out soon.
